Look and Feel
I used look and feel as the heading of this paragraph and not design, and there is a reason to that. The Canon Imageclass MF244dw has a professional looking classic design. It becomes a crisis if we go out looking for multi-function printers. Most of the products available in market under MFP category are either too boring to look at or just don’t fit well inside a luxurious living. Canon shifted the whole tale making it a new beginning in printers making it a remarkable product in looks and design.
canon Imageclass MF244dw was packed inside a massive box and we knew it’s going to be a big printer. And the printer was big as expected. However, it wasn’t that big as we expected. The device is nearly 3-inches bigger than the smallest MFP available in market.
There are minute design alterations that Canon has done in the Imageclass MF244dw. For example, the design etched at the top of its body. Rugged quality plastic is used to construct the printer. There is a physical push button which believes to be a better choice over the ones used in regular printers. Fine quality LCD panel has easy-to-use controls packed inside it. We hadn’t expected the interface so much expressive, it did stand out there. The screen is flexible to tilt across some certain degrees and does not feel stiff. The only division which is rigid, is its cartridge unit cover. Well it has to be stiff otherwise one could easily open up the other unit in place of another.
Though the printer is dense, you would still need a supplementary space for keeping it. You would need a dedicated space for it to fit in before choosing it. And there are other touch screen options available as well that you can look out before putting the icing on the cake.
Just like most of the other MFPs, the printing route on the Imageclass MF244dw is towards the back, and the pages land totally contained inside the printer dimensions. The multipurpose tray has markings for convenient paper installation.
Duplex printing feature comes as a standard on the canon Imageclass MF244dw, while the feature is still optional in other laser printers. The duplex unit is at centre bottom and can be easily accessible through the rear side of the device in case of paper jam.
The most awe-inspiring feature on the Canon Imageclass MF244dw is its printing speed. Apart from the usual heating time that it takes, once it’s fully functional it can print at a speed of nearly 28ppm. In our testing time, once the printer was fully charged up it didn’t took any additional charging time to print more than 40pages in a single run.
|Parameters||Canon Imageclass MF244dw|
|Turn on/ turn off time||10 seconds / 1 second|
|First page out||14 seconds|
|BnW document (word)||2+ seconds|
|Full page glossy A4 photo||4+ seconds|
Print Quality and Cost
Quality often not matter much when it comes to black and white laser printers, especially if it’s manufactured for small office and home use. Most of the times these printers are either used in shops or small offices that have a decent printing need. We don’t expect them to be exceptionally precise in color calibration. Although it’s not much concern, but there’s a direct connection between the color used in a page and the cost involved in printing it. And that cost matter to every person buying an MFP.
There’s a reason why so much is explained in the top paragraph. We were impressed by the product design and its speed. However, as soon as we printed a color calibration sheet, we couldn’t find many variations in the shades of black color. Most of the shades were unerringly similar to the adjacent shade. Now let’s talk about how cost efficient the canon Imageclass MF244dw actually is.
The original cost of 337 toner cartridge is approx. INR 4000, although one starter cartridge is packed with it that could print upto 1700 pages, you can easily get the toner filled at much cheaper cost.
|Toner cost||INR 5,699.00|
|Yield||Up to 2,400 pages|
|Per page cost||Approx. 42 paise per page|
Looking at the data, the figures look competent. And if this is the per page cost that Imageclass MF244 dw will deliver than we think it’s a good number, better than most of the others.
Connectivity and Convenience
The standard wired and wireless connectivity features on the printer include High-Speed USB 2.0, 10 / 100 Base-T Ethernet and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n respectively. Then you can also use the wireless connection feature via Canon PRINT Business, Canon Print Service, Google’s Cloud Print, Apple’s AirPrint and Mopria Print Service.
After the printer was placed at one area of the table, we plugged the wires first, it was all trouble-free. Hooking up the printer via Ethernet and USB 2.0 port was easy-peasy. Once the wired connectivity was successfully done, we tried using the printer wirelessly. And that’s when we realized the technical hitches involved in the interface. It’s not as easy as we thought, but it’s not that difficult as you’re assuming. The printer only calls for some extra time, that’s all. Once it was connected successfully the wireless antenna light glowed up, and everything turned out to be effortless once again.
Apart from the unpacking and transferring inconveniences there is not much time consuming bustle involved with the Imageclass MF244 dw.
Energy saving and Quiet mode
During full operation the average power consumption involved is approx. 490W, which can go as high as 1,150W. Average standby mode will consume 4.1W of power, which will go down to an average of 1.4W. Depending on your personal preference you can decide whether the number is appropriate for your budget or not.
If we talk about Quiet Mode, well, the statement is as similar as the one used in digital cameras. There is a noticeable change in sound level, which has an effect on overall printing performance, but the mode works fine.
