• Strong Built

• Good battery life
• Decent hardware performance
• 4GB RAM & 32GB ROM
• Front flash works fine
• Good viewing angles
• Great sound output
• Slippery ergonomics
Coolpad launched its latest smartphone “Note5” in India in the month of September. It’s been nearly two years since Coolpad entered the Indian smartphone arena. The Company launched some cool devices so far among which Coolpad Note3 was a big hit. In a segment priced under 10K, I think Coolpad offers decent specifications and reliable smartphones to Indian customers.
The latest Coolpad Note5 is a 5.5-inch smartphone with a Full HD 2.5d curved display. The device runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has a decent hardware and gaming performance. Let’s check out what all is there in the new Coolpad Note5.
Design and Built
A unibody metal design with curved glass is the new trend these days, Coolpad is following the same. The latest Coolpad Note 5 has a tough built metal body which might seem heavy but considering the segment, it’s decent. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the rear side which I think is a better choice compared to the front one. The 13MP rear camera and fingerprint scanner has a shiny circular ring that elevates the overall built of the smartphone.
The smartphone looks similar to the earlier version of Redmi 3 prime but the Note 5 is a heavy built smartphone. The Metal body design with curved glass and glossy metal ring round the camera and fingerprint sensor gives a premium appearance to the smartphone. However, the design would be more preferred if the smartphone was slimmer.
Coolpad Note 5 has two LED flashes, one in rear and the other one on the front. While the rear flash shines white and also brightens the images captured from 4ft. The front flash works fine and even in low light situations it helps in capturing bright selfies with good amount of detailing in them.
The power button is placed on right, next to the sim card/micro SD card slot, whereas the volume buttons are placed on the left side. The speaker grill is placed on rear bottom side of the smartphone and even if the phone is placed on table or couch the sound gets little affected by it.
Power and volume buttons are easily accessible and the fingerprint scanner is also placed on easy to get to location. But using the smartphone with one hand could not be possible for an average Indian consumer.
The 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) curved display of Coolpad Note5 is bright and crisp and adds beauty to the smartphone when unlocked. The screen to body ratio is like all the other smartphones of this category. The capacitive touch buttons are placed on bottom with no Backlit LED. 8MP front camera along with earpiece and proximity sensor next to the LED light are placed on top front.
Performance and Gaming
Two Whatsapp and Facebook accounts can be operated directly from a single smartphone. Coolpad Note 5 comes with a new feature in which if you have two Whatsapp and Facebook accounts, you can simply access them without the hassle of carrying two different smartphones. There is an option in the phone settings that allows you to operate two Facebook and Whatsapp accounts. A regular Facebook icon along with a new icon of second account appears on the home screen.
Coolpad follows a different style of notification panel in which the notification bar is placed on the top while the notification panel is placed on the bottom of the screen. Accessing the notification panel by swiping upwards is easy but many a times it happens that we might press the home button simultaneously and the phone comes back to the home screen. The notification panel makes it easier to use the smartphones sometimes. However, I didn’t find one hand feature like many Xiaomi smartphone that helps you in using the smartphone with a single hand.
Coolpad Note 5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Coolui 8.0 on top. The smartphone comes with minimalist bloatware which also provides user more storage in the smartphone. The 1.5GHz Octa-core processor from Qualcomm is fast and with 4GB of RAM the smartphone performs like charm.
After installing some high-end games and a bunch of application I tested the performance. In gaming, there was no lag. Coolpad Note 5 runs all the high end games simple as ABC.
I played Asphalt8, Dungeon Hunter 5, Asphalt xtreme, Real steel WRB, Modern Combat 5, Dead trigger and Tiny Archers. All the games were smooth and run without any lag. Performance is swift and the battery consumption is also not an issue.
Dual application feature works fine and multitasking is also very swift.
Whether the battery backup should be more than one day or not, that’s not the question. But, it has to appropriate to cover a whole day. Coolpad Note 5 Easily gives you a day of battery backup and many a times ever more. The smartphone has a 4010mAh battery that easily lasts more than a day in average use and even in heavy use the battery could last till 11PM.
Definitely the Coolpad Note5 has a lot of impressive features such as fast performance, long lasting battery backup and dual applications. The smartphone is a good choice, but compared to Redmi Note 3 and Le eco Le 2 the Coolpad Note 5 needs a little twitch in built and camera performance to win economic smartphones battle.
