Xiaomi Redmi 4A Review- Compact, Nimble, Cheap and Cheerful
What do you expect of a Sub 6K smartphone? Not much, but there are limited choices that come to my mind when I take 6K as a smartphone budget. And even if there are choices, these aren’t the actual smartphones that one actually wants to buy. There are tons of reasons for the statement given above, but to me, they just don’t offer the actual smartphone experience, which is very important. A smartphone could be costly or less costly, but they both should offer a great user experience depending on their price range.
With that being said, Xiaomi Redmi 4A ought to act as a smartphone priced at Rs.5999 only, however it offers features that most of the 7K smartphones offer these days. Out of which mostly are Xiaomi devices. Let’s take an in-depth look into the Redmi 4A before jumping to conclusion.
Xiaomi Redmi 4A is crafted out of a plastic unibody design which feels chunky compared to any other smartphone. While other manufacturers are presenting thinner devices with curved edges, there’s nothing like this to be found on the Redmi 4A, however it’s very lightweight. Weighing just 131.5grams, the device measures 139.9 x 70.4 x 8.5 mm in dimensions and offers a screen-to-body ratio of nearly 69%. The smartphone features a 5-inch display that has a resolution of HD 720 x 1280pixels with ~296ppi pixel density. There are three non-backlit navigation keys placed at the bottom of the device. Lastly, a front camera adjacent to calling speaker and sensors is placed on top.
On the rear there’s a 13-megapixel camera and a speaker placed at the bottom of the device. The speaker placement looks tricky as whenever you place the smartphone on a flat surface, the audio usually gets affected a little.
What I really loved about Xiaomi Redmi 4A is how easily you can use the smartphone with one hand. The 5-inch display and its compact size make using the smartphone as easy as pie. Additionally, there’s an infrared blaster placed at top of the smartphone which allows you to easily connect the smartphone to your television and DTH box.
Taking into consideration the price tag at which the Redmi 4A comes at, I had not expected much from it. In fact it surprised me with its performance. The smartphone is powered by a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 SoC coupled with Adreno 308 GPU. It has 2GB of RAM with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage that can further be expanded upto 256GB via micro SD (hybrid slot).
I mostly use a smartphone for browsing, social media, watching videos, calling and reading mails. And in all of these, Redmi 4A performed exceptionally well. Not only that, during our testing period, we installed Asphalt 8 which it handled amazingly well. Obviously I’ve got used to a fingerprint scanner now and I did miss it a lot, nevertheless, I don’t count it as a limitation completely considering the price.
The Xiaomi Redmi 4A features a 13-megapixel rear camera that captures exceptionally sharp photographs. No other phone in the same price category offers the camera quality that this smartphone delivers from its rear camera. Check out the sample shots.
See the details closely
Check the color levels. Colors were pretty much accurate and the photographs had precise detailing in them.
The autofocus system on the smartphone is not very reliable and I would recommend you using the ‘touch to focus’ function. It also feels that shutter button requires a little more press on than any other usual function, which annoys sometimes.
Selfies captured on the smartphone are again very good. Color level is precise and there’s good amount of detailing in them.
The Xiaomi Redmi 4A packs a 3120mAh battery which can easily last more than a day. After continuously using the smartphone for nearly 4hours just for watching videos, camera and social media, the smartphone consumed nealy 15% of battery which was very amazing.
There’s no better choice available in the same price range. Specifications offered by the Redmi 4A are unmatchable and the user experience was also good. If you have a much higher budget, go for a different device, however if 6K is your bar than this is the best choice available in the market right now.
